What if we already know how?
Already know how to resist, persist, sustain, access revolutionary joy and creativity, enact and teach radical interdependence, dismantle oppressive systems or at least oppressive tendencies in ourselves?
What if we already know how, but we need to come together to remember?
4 DANCE CLASSES FOR EVERY BODY
With Hana van der Kolk
We’ll start with a guided warm up into/through breath, bone, muscle, ground, heat, sound, feelings, eros, presence, will travel together through imagination-centering prompts to jostle/expand how we move/feel in/about our bodies and interrupt inhibition, and will play with movement patterns and collaborative movement games. We’ll dance to/with music, sweat, practice finding self consent, and invite/look for absorption with self, world, other, now. We’ll move in and out of form and improvisation. No dance experience necessary. Everything will be adaptable. Wear what feels fab and comfortable and maybe even celebratory.
Hana van der Kolk is a queer dancer, artist, and facilitator of ritual, embodied learning, and celebration. They live on unceded Mohican, Mohawk, and Haudenosaunee lands, colonially known as the Hudson Valley, New York. Hana spends time looking for and co-creating bridges through dance, pedagogy, performance, language, celebration, resistance to empire, and personal and collective restoration and transformation. In this process, they create performances, organize parades (FlagsSs Day in Troy!) and parties, design and lead workshops and dance classes, offer one-on-one coaching & sex and gender expansion work, write, and make little objects and videos. Hana has worked internationally as a teacher and facilitator, performer, and artist since 2001 and collaborates with many artists, healers, and tricksters. They hold an MFA in Dance from UCLA and a practice-based PhD from RPI, where their dissertation focused on queer friendship, telepathy, and somatic technologies for recovery from the delusion of separateness. They started studying dance when they were three years old and never stopped.
